To nurture resilient urban communities where children access quality education and enrichment opportunities, elders receive compassionate care and support, and families experience improved health and wellbeing through accessible services and alternative therapies—enabling every household to live with dignity, stability, and renewed hope for the future.
Urban poverty presents a complex and urgent challenge. A significant proportion of the urban poor are engaged in the unorganised sector or survive on low-paid jobs within the organised workforce. Their incomes are meagre, employment is unstable, and asset ownership is minimal or negligible.
Urban homelessness remains a critical issue, particularly affecting women who face heightened vulnerability and insecurity. At the same time, urban poor children are experiencing a serious decline in reading and writing abilities, accompanied by reduced interest in education and learning. Interrupted schooling, limited academic support at home, and socio-economic stress have widened educational gaps.
In response, ECOMWEL is strengthening its Urban Poor Development Programme to reach vulnerable families in Moggapair and surrounding areas, working towards sustainable improvement in education, health, and elderly care.

Our Approach
ECOMWEL adopts an integrated community-based approach that focuses on:

Our goal is not only to address immediate needs but to restore dignity, stability, and hope within urban communities.
Programme Objectives
- Provide supplementary and complementary education for children from urban poor backgrounds (Standards 1–8) through structured evening study centres
- Enhance educational outcomes and rekindle interest in learning
- Create awareness on health issues and facilitate access to healthcare services
- Strengthen geriatric care and support systems for elderly urban poor women and men.

Children’s Educational Support Programme
The Evening Study Centre serves as a safe and structured learning space where children receive:
- Academic guidance and homework support
- Foundational literacy and numeracy strengthening
- Student enrichment programmes
- Life skill education
- Nutrition support
- Regular parent interactions to strengthen home–school engagement
This holistic support helps children regain confidence, improve academic performance, and remain committed to their education.
Elderly Care and Support
Urban elderly, particularly women, often face neglect, isolation, and financial insecurity. ECOMWEL provides:
- Monthly elderly group meetings
- Family visits and follow-up support
- Geriatric counselling
- Alternative therapies for improved wellbeing
- Monthly essential kits for vulnerable elders
- Health education and awareness programmes
Health Awareness Programmes
Health vulnerability is a major concern among the urban poor. ECOMWEL conducts:
- Community health awareness sessions
- Preventive healthcare education
- Information on accessing government health services
- Awareness on nutrition and hygiene
The focus is on preventive care, early identification of health concerns, and informed health-seeking behaviour.
Homeless Identification and Support
Urban homelessness demands sensitive and timely intervention. ECOMWEL works to:
- Identify homeless individuals, especially vulnerable women
- Facilitate access to welfare schemes and essential services
- Provide referral and linkage support
