To build empowered tribal communities where access to quality education, sustainable livelihoods, and inclusive opportunities strengthens self-reliance, preserves cultural heritage, and enables families to live with dignity, equity, and hope for generations to come.
Tribal communities represent one of the key focus groups of ECOMWEL’s development interventions. Recognising the historical disadvantages and socio-economic vulnerabilities faced by indigenous communities, ECOMWEL implements an Integrated Tribal Development Programme that addresses education, livelihood security, health awareness, and social protection — while upholding dignity and cultural identity.
Community Context
Irula Community
The Irular community is primarily engaged in agricultural labour, traditional rat and snake catching, and other low-income occupations. Limited livelihood options, irregular employment, and high levels of illiteracy contribute to economic insecurity. The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted their fragile income streams, deepening poverty and vulnerability.
Narikurava Community
Education among Narikurava children remains a major concern. High school dropout rates, seasonal migration of parents in search of livelihoods, poverty, and limited awareness of educational importance contribute to interrupted schooling.

In response, ECOMWEL adopts an integrated and child-centred approach that combines education support, life skill development, health awareness, and social protection facilitation. Our approach is rooted in community engagement, trust-building, and sustained handholding.
- Enhance reading and writing abilities of tribal children and renew their interest in education
- Strengthen life skills through structured interventions, including bicycle training to improve mobility and confidence
- Promote awareness on health, healthcare services, and preventive practices
- Facilitate access to government welfare schemes and entitlements
- Conduct campaigns against child marriage and promote continuation of education
- Provide need-based elderly care support in tribal habitations
