DIGITAL LITERACY AMONG RURAL/URBAN POOR YOUTH> DIRECT GRASSROOT INTERVENTION
ECOMWEL with its wide experience of supporting development projects in Skill building process launched Computer training support Initiative. – ENACT. This initiative aimed at supporting poor youth both boys & girls to access quality computer education and increase their job opportunities to sustain their lives. This Pilot project enabled the poor youth to realize their dreams by equipping them with life and vocational skills
Partner projects – current and former partners were engaged in identifying and admitting the students in government recognized computer educational institutions. In the reporting period 58 poor youth were identified and supported for the basic computer training courses and 10 poor youth were supported for the degrees courses.
Apart from the above the rural poor youth were supported to learn basic computer skills through current and former projects. The technical knowledge and skills through the computer training enlarged the scope for job opportunities for the poor youth.
Through this project differently abled students are offered support to learn computers with the collaborative support of ECOMWEL Orthopedic centre at Taramangalam, Salem
ECOMWEL established partnership with PSGR Krishnammal College for women, Coimbatore and St. Joseph’s Community College, (NJPCSET) Nagapattinam.
Through the Basic courses poor youth develop knowledge, understanding and skills in Basic Computer, Desktop Printing (DTP) and Tally (Accounting Software Package). Through these courses the tribals learn, train and work on Microsoft Office, Designing and Input of periodic statement of accounts and analysis. They know how to use a computer, Learning and getting trained in Tally helps them in the path to become a professional accountant and earn. As a DTP specialist one becomes to be good in creating and designing documents and web pages too. On the whole basic courses has enabled the poor youth to gain job opportunity that support their living.
Given the context of rising Unemployment the need to equip the youth with newer skills emerged as a critical need. Hence ECOMWEL identified Rural poor Youth as a group for skill building and enhancement process and provided support to access quality computer education. Former partner organisations and current project partners were engaged in identifying and admitting the students in government recognized computer educational institutions.
257 students were given basic computer training & 81 students were trained in the degree courses.
